This page will contain information relevant to the trip my sisters and I will be taking to recreate the route of my granddad’s journey.
Our Route
Below are a list of cities that Lloyd traveled thru. I have a link to the google map to show how we plan on driving between the cities. Any city without a link is included in the link that is below it it. You can see that we are not on the interstate unless that is where the route of the road went. We are often on the “Old” US highway and even on cut off roads from the US Highways. With all the realignments of the highways over the years, it is impossible to follow “exactly” the route but we should be within a mile of it on most of the journey.

Our Car
The only similarities between our car and Lloyds are
- It’s black
- It’s a car
- I bought it in North Carolina
- I bought it used
I bought the car in August 2014 because I have a father-in-law living with me and a granddaughter that was born September 17th. The two door car I had just didn’t work. After looking for three months and test driving every car around, I found the BMW. But it was the end of the model year and the Series 5 I wanted could not be found. Since I needed the car before the birth, I asked about pre-owned. That’s when the dealer showed me the 640i. I loved it. This car has everything, unlike Lloyd’s.
The Sisters
Lloyd was our granddad and his son Lloyd B Smith Jr was our dad. I would love to be sharing this with either of the Lloyds but both have passed. We all grew up in Lenoir North Carolina. Susan, sister 1, still lives in Lenoir and is a math instructor at Caldwell Community College. I (Claire) am sister 2 and I live in Carolina Beach North Carolina. I’m a remote employee for SAS Institute, in Cary North Carolina. I’m a geek. Pam is sister 3 and lives in Granite Falls North Carolina. She teaches chemistry at South Caldwell High School.
When we travel, July 2015, Susan and Pam will be out of school. I on the other hand will have to take vacation, but, I will work some half days from the back seat of the car. That’s the great thing about the internet, all you need is a wireless hotspot and you can have access almost anywhere. Can you imagine what Lloyd and his friends would have thought about the resources we will have at our finger tips?
