Well, it’s just not going to work out to do the recreation of my granddad’s route this summer. A family medical issue has come up which is going to impact the trip. Instead of compressing the time frame, my sisters and I have decided to just postpone the trip until next summer. I hope to use the time to find historic hotels and activities to include in the trip. I’ll also keep saving my hotel points – part of the trip will be – see how far my hotel points will take us on the trip.
Well, I had to come to San Antonio for a Board meeting and I really hoped to get out and see some of the places granddad saw. The weather though did not cooperate. On the way back to the airport today (in the rain), I got the cabbie to detour by the Old Lone Star Brewery. This is not the San Antonio Museum of Art. I jumped out of the cab and into the rain to take 2 quick pictures of the building. I had also wanted to detour to the Japanese Gardens as it was close by the route to the airport but the rain was just too bad to get any kind of decent picture without getting soaked. Enjoy the 2 pictures of the brewery.
I did stay at the St Anthony hotel in downtown San Antonio. It was built in 1909 so it would have been here when granddad came thru. The hotel is undergoing major renovations and this past weekend was their first “soft” opening. It was fun giving them feedback on the hotel, areas of improvement, items that were wrong (my hot and cold in the shower were reversed) and items that would cause problems( a hot shower will cause condensation on the bathroom door which then drips on the wood floor instead of the bathroom tile floor.)
Last week I had to go to Los Angeles for 2 days for business. All I could think about was the differences between now and when my granddad traveled there. The one day conference was at Mary Pickfair’s estate. Granddad had a postcard from there. He also traveled to Venice Beach and Ocean Park and I drove over there to see it for the afternoon. The traffic was horrible though so I didn’t stop except for a second in Venice Beach. I sure would have loved to have seen the area thru my granddad’s eyes
